World Championship medalist Shiva Thapa and CWG gold-winner Manoj Kumar made a positive start to their campaign, reaching the second round of the Men’s National Boxing Championship in Guwahati on Friday.

While local favourite Shiva was unanimously adjudged winner over Gumin Gara of Arunachal Pradesh in a lightweight (60kg) category, Manoj, representing Raiways sports promotion board, outclassed Tamil Nadu’s Manikanadan 5-0 in welter (69kg) category.

In fly weight (52kg), comeback man L Devendro Singh, representing Manipur, eked out a 3-2 win over Bhoj Raj of Uttar Pradesh to reach the second round.

Among others in flyweight, Roshan of Rajasthan, Niraj of Haryana and Uttarakhand’s Arvind emerged victorious, while Buntee Singh of Delhi, A Malemnganga of Manipur and Sukhraj of Sikkim also reached the second round in bantamweight.

In light fly weight, Tamil Nadu’s Hari Krishanan defeated Palsarvesh, representing All India Police; Shayam Kumar of Raiways sports promotion board beat Pankaj Saini of Punjab in unanimous decisions, while Neeraj from Delhi was given walkover by Meghalaya’s Pynskhemlang. Uttar Pradesh’s Gobind too reached the next round beating Suraj Raut of Bengal.

Neeraj of All India Police, Jammu & Kashmir’s Ashish, Meghalaya’s Tilok Budha notched up a dominating 5-0 wins over their respective opponents in welter (69kg) weight. Satpal Singh of Jharkhand, Mizoram’s Andy Chauha, Ankush Hudda of Chandigarh and Rocky of Haryana also progressed to the next round.

In middle weight (75kg), Uttarakhand’s Sumit Kumar, Rajasthan’s Pritam Singh, Prabagaran of Pondicherry and Madhya Pradesh’s Dushyant also registered victories in the opening round.

In light heavy division (81kg), Chirag of Delhi, Geeta Nanad of Himachal Pradesh and Dilip Yadav of Maharashtra also reached the second round.

In light welter weight, VP Shaun Mukesh of Tamil Nadu, Ashish of Haryana, RSPB’s Rohit and Rajasthan’s Pritam Singh advanced to the second round.

In light division (60kg), Manish of SSCB and Sunil Chouhan of Uttar Pradesh notched up wins in their opening round bouts.

In heavy weight category (91kg), Rohit Shinde of Manipur, Jasveer Singh of RSPB, Gaurav of MP and UP’s Vishawjit also progressed to the second round.
