Hundreds of women joined in for the second edition of Pinkathon, India’s biggest ‘women only’ marathon, in Guwahati on Sunday morning. A concept initiated by actor and super model Milind Soman for creating awareness about women’s health and breast cancer, the event is being conducted across the country in 12 places this year.

“It was a great fun to be here again after last year. I ran 3 kilometres. It’s a great initiative by Milind Soman. I urge all the women to come out and participate,” said Tarali Hazarika, a participant.

The run started from Sonaram High School ground and was categorized as 3km, 5km, 10km and 21km runs.

Milind Soman, a fitness enthusiast himself, said that this run would mean a lot towards creating awareness and women empowerment.

“It is the seed of change and the beginning of a movement that is carried forward by a growing community of empowered women across India, who share a belief that a healthy family, a healthy nation and a healthy world begins with empowered women. The first step in empowerment is taking control of your own health, respecting yourself and understanding and celebrating the value you bring to your family and society. Empowerment is not a gift of society; it is a gift you give yourself,” he added.

Monali Bhardwaj, a cancer survivor and one of the mascots of the run, said that this would inspire women to come forward and take care of their health.

“Pinkathon is about making yourself aware about your health. I was detected with cancer but I’m fine now. Cancer can be cured if it is detected early. We appeal all to come and join,” said Monali.

Former champion athlete of Assam Tayabun Nisha was also a part of the run.
