At least 13 people died in upper Assam after consuming poisonous mushrooms, reports said on April 13.

According to reports, as many as 39 people from upper Assam districts of Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Tinsukia districts were admitted at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh for treatment in the last seven days.

News agency IANS reported quoting AMCH superintendent Prasanta Dihingia that most of the people who consumed wild mushroom died while undergoing treatment.

“As many as 13 people including a minor died due to consumption of poisonous mushrooms in last seven days. Total 39 patients were admitted to the hospital from four districts of the upper Assam region and out of which 13 people died,” Dr Prasanta Dihingia was quoted as saying by ANI.

Reports said that of the 39 people admitted, 13 have died while many others are still undergoing treatment at the hospital.

“Most of them are from tea garden areas. Many people from the upper Assam region fall ill after eating poisonous mushrooms every year,” the AMCH official added.
