138 candidates in Assam have criminal cases; 264 crorepatis in fray

As many as 12% of the total candidates contesting in the Assam assembly elections have declared serious criminal cases against them.

In a study report released by Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) on April 1, the election watch organization said that 109 candidates declared serious criminal charges while 138 (15%) of the total candidates have declared criminal cases against them.

The ADR report was based on analysis of election affidavits of 941 candidates contesting the elections in the state.

The report said that Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi, who is contesting the elections from the Sivasagar assembly seat, has the highest number of serious cases registered against him. Akhil Gogoi, who is currently in jail for his alleged involvement in the anti-CAA violence in 2019, has 27 serious IPC cases against him while the number of total cases goes up to 52.

Out of the total 126 assembly constituencies, the report said that 13 constituencies have three or more candidates with criminal charges contesting the elections.

Average asset of Rs 2.1 crore in Assam

Interestingly, Assam has the highest percentage of Crorepati candidates with 28% ultrarich candidates contesting the elections. The Crorepati figure is 27% in Kerala, 23% in Puducherry, 18% in Tamil Nadu and 14% till phase 3 in West Bengal.

Out of the 941 candidates contesting the elections in Assam, the ADR report said that 264 of them are Crorepati candidates. The average asset of all candidates contesting the elections in the state stood at Rs 2.1 crore. Interestingly, 11 of the total 941 candidates in Assam had not filed Income Tax Returns.

United Peoples Party Liberal candidate from Kokrajhar West constituency, Manaranjan Brahma is the richest candidate contesting the elections in the state. He declared an asset of more than Rs 268 crore.

Only 76 of the 941 candidates contesting the elections in Assam are women.
