A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar’s northwestern part on Wednesday evening triggering widespread shockwaves across Northeast India and parts of North and Eastern India. The epicenter of the quake – that occurred at a depth of 122 km – was around 7 km west of Kanbalu in Sagaing region and near Chindwin river bank in Myanmar.
Eighteen areas in Myanmar, including Yangon, Ayeyawaddy, Rakhine, Kalay as well as Sittway, felt the quake, while in India the shockwaves were felt even in New Delhi.
No immediate report of casualties was available though there were reports of minor damages to property in Imphal, Guwahati, Shillong, Dibrugarh and nearby areas.

In Guwahati, residents rushed out of their houses, with people residing in multi-storeyed buildings panicking the most. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) control room however said it had not received any report of major damages till after one hour of the quake.
