The BJP’s ‘Selfie with Sarbananda’ campaign, launched on April 6, became an instant hit among the youths as data shared by the party suggests that more than 4,000 people clicked selfies with the party’s CM candidate Sarbananda Sonowal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the new application.

The application, installed in mobile vans campaigning across over 100 locations daily that go to polls on April 11, saw enthusiasm among the youngsters who tried the new technology and took print outs of the selfies instantly.

While Aniket, a student, couldn’t meet Narendra Modi in Guwahati, where the prime minister was on Friday for election campaigning, he could take a selfie with Modi through the application and uploaded on Facebook. “BJP’s tryst with technology gives me the belief that the party’s agenda of development will yield fruit in Assam. I am looking for a positive change and I am happy that I could show my support to the party with new-age tools like virtual augmented reality and click a selfie with the prime minister,” said Aniket who shared two selfies on Facebook – one with the prime minister and another with CM candidate Sarbananda Sonowal.

The campaign is one of the first such initiatives by a political party in Northeast India. The campaign gels with Narendra Modi’s youth connect initiatives, and has garnered amazing popularity in such a short time-frame.

Through the unique campaign, conceptualised by the BJP’s IT cell, over 100 locations are being tapped in a day through poll campaign vehicles moving across 61 constituencies that will go to polls in the second phase. The app has given a chance to the young voters to click pictures with a virtual replica of the party’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It has mobilized the ground-level connect of the party with people getting the option to print their photos with the leaders through a printer present in the vans.

While launching the campaign in Guwahati on Wednesday, Union road transport, highways and shipping minister Nitin Gadkari said, “The best thing about this campaign is that one can click a selfie with Sarbananda Sonowal or the Prime Minister without them physically being present there. This is technology.”

In the app, whenever an individual is clicking a selfie, a transparent wall of Narendra Modi or Sarbananda Sonowal comes up overlapping the selfie thereby giving a perfect photograph which will have one of the two politicians with the selfie clicker in spite of the fact that the politicians are not personally present at the spot. The instantly printed photograph acts as a memoir of the election.
