Strong winds throw life out of gear in Shillong

Strong winds gushed through Shillong on Tuesday afternoon leaving life out of gear in many areas. Moderate to severe destruction of property was reported in many areas as electricity supply was snapped following the speedy wind.

As many as 30 houses including a school were damaged when a cyclonic wind accompanied by heavy downpour struck parts of the city on Tuesday at around 2 pm.

The cyclonic wind left behind a trail of destruction in several parts of the city—Nongmynsong, Pynthorumkhrah, Umpling, Nongrah, Golflink area, Mawlynrei and others, a The Northeast Today report said.

Shillong is witnessing rainy weather since a week and locals said that it seemed like an early onset of monsoon in the hill station.Senior journalist with the Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim, was continuously updating the nature's furry that hit Shillong. A NDRF team was helping with the relief operations. According to the meteorological department in Shillong, the speed of the wind was 24 kmph. A local school at Nongmynsong, Guru Nanak Secondary School which is one of the oldest schools in the locality was damaged as tin roofs were ripped apart and furniture misplaced.  In Guwahati, rains started since late evening and the met department has predicted similar conditions till Wednesday.
