A view of the GS Road near ABC

Large areas of Guwahati were waterlogged by flash floods following heavy rain on Wednesday (June 15, 2016) that disrupted normal life. Most parts of the city were inundated by artificial floods as heavy rains lashed the city for nearly an hour in the forenoon. Massive water logging was reported from across the city, disrupting road communication in the main roads as well as arteries.

Heavy rains lashed the city around 1030 hrs, leading to the artificial floods.

Almost all the important areas, including Ganeshguri, Chandmari, GS Road – ABC, Ambari, Panjabari and Maligaon, were under water.

Water has entered the houses in those areas. Students, office goers and others had difficulty in reaching their destinations wading through the water that prevented movement of vehicles.

The MLA hostel and state Assembly premise were also under water.

The water logging led to massive traffic jam across the city, with vehicular movement coming to a halt in many parts for a long time due to the artificial floods.

Artificial floods are a routine problem in the city as open spaces and natural water bodies are being encroached by rapid urbanisation.
