People block the National Highway demanding setting of the AIIMS at Raha in Nagaon district of Assam

Amid row over setting up of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Assam, state health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that it was the previous Tarun Gogoi-led government in the state who gave consent to set up AIIMS at Changsari instead of Raha and allocated land for the prestigious project.

While speaking to the media on Monday, Sarma said, “The land for establishing AIIMS in Changsari was allocated by the Tarun Gogoi-led government.” He added that the Congress party was now playing cheap politics by supporting the protesters who wanted the AIIMS to be set up in Raha.

Sarma lambasted the opposition for criticizing the state government over the issue. The health minister said that it was he who had proposed Raha’s name for setting up AIIMS and records of the proposal dates back till July 15, 2014.

Reaction of the Congress party on the issue is awaited.
