In an act of absolute intolerance and lack of responsible behaviour, a section of student boarders from MNDP hostel of Cotton College, Guwahati went on a rampage near Guwahati railway station on Thursday night.

Tarnishing the glory of the educational institute, the hostel boarders reportedly were in an inebriated condition and got into a disgraceful act of vandalism and molestation against Uber drivers, Commandos of the women unit of the Assam Police and journalists on Thursday night at around 11:30 pm.

The students vandalized cabs registered under Uber and also attacked a few media vehicles. It was also alleged that women police personnel were molested when they tried to disperse the angry mob.

The mob went on a rampage equipped with rods, cricket bats and hockey sticks. While around 10 cab drivers were reported to be injured in the madness, around 30 vehicles were reported to be damaged, including two media vehicles. The mob also damaged camera of news crew who went on to the site for reporting the absolute madness.

At around 7 pm on Thursday an Uber came to drop a client near Cotton College where an auto driver snatched the Uber driver’s device and abused him to leave the area saying ‘you guys have taken our customers’. When the Uber driver protested, a few Cottonians of MNDP Boys Hostel came out and were involved in a fight with the driver. The driver ran away towards the railway station and late, at around 10:30 pm, the UBER driver went along with a few other drivers to recover the handset. The drunk Cottonians came out and picked a fight with the drivers. This led to Uber Association informing its union, and all the Uber cabs available rushed towards the spot. Over 40 cabs were reported to have arrived at the spot including media and police personnel.

Cottonians not only vandalised all the vehicles but also have attacked the media vehicles and broke the cameras. Later Cottonians started protesting against the media shouting slogans of ‘Media Go Back’.

The ACP Panbazar arrived at the spot along with CRPF and Veerangana personnel. One of the Veerangana Commandos was injured. Cameraman of a media house and many civilians were severely injured. Today, morning at around 10 am, the Uber drivers protested in front of Panbazar Police Station lodging FIR against the Cottonians.
