The Assam government has decided that the portrait of the great Assamese warrior Lachit Borphukan will be displayed in all offices under the state government including educational institutions, boards, corporations, autonomous bodies, agencies etc. This decision was made with a view to keep the legacy of valour and patriotism of Lachit Borphukan afresh in the national life of Assam.
The portrait of Lachit Borphukan should measure a length of 24 inches and breadth of 18 inches. The portrait should reflect the legendary warrior’s bravery and his dedication to his motherland. The portrait must be hung at a suitable position so as to draw the attention of maximum numbers of viewers, a note said.
Lachit Borphukan was a commander and Borphukan in the Ahom kingdom known for his leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat that thwarted a drawn-out attempt by Mughal forces under the command of Ramsingh I to take back Kamrup. He died about a year later due to illness.
