Bodoland University

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that steps would be taken to solve the problems of Bodoland University and Bineswar Brahma Engineering College, Kokrajhar after chairing a meeting to review the status of these two educational institutions on Saturday.

The CM took stock of the present developmental activities going on at both Bodoland University and Bineswar Brahma Engineering College and discussed various plans for making both institutions top educational centres of the state.

Observing that out of 139 posts at Bodoland University, 55 would be appointed now to meet the requirement of UGC 12 (B) which would facilitate speedy growth of the university. The rest 84 posts of non-teaching staff would also be filled up soon so that functioning of the varsity does not have to suffer, Sonowal said.

On being apprised about the issue of extending the retirement age of registrar and equivalent posts till 62 years as the vice-chancellor and professor’s retirement age is fixed at 70 and 65 years respectively by the education department, Sonowal said that steps would be taken in this regard to extend the retirement age as per UGC guidelines.

Saying that the high enrolment of 1,500 students in the varsity shows the demand of the institution as a centre of higher education in BTAD area, Sonowal directed the university representatives to consult an architect to derive maximum benefit out of the 365 bighas of land allotted to the varsity by fully utilising all areas of the landscape.

“We must build it as a premier institute of higher education in the state and for that all concerned must work with a proper plan and architectural design,” Sonowal said.

On the Bineswear Brahma Engineering College at Kokrajhar, the CM instructed the college representatives to start two new streams of civil engineering and computer science and engineering in addition to the two streams presently taught at the college.

He also assured of taking all steps to improve the college so that technical education needs can be fulfilled at the BTAD area.
