In a bid to push cashless transaction, the Assam Electronics Development Corporation Ltd has developed an e-wallet tokapoisa.in which will be formally launched at the two-day DigiDhan Mela that begins at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra on Wednesday.

Assam IT minister Keshab Mahanta said the e-wallet will be a virtual payment terminal and will also enable government-related transactions. It will have provisions for balance-sheet records and accounting systems, features that will allure merchant payments. To enable offline payment, local cards will be available for paying through tokapoisa.in, the minister added. The e-wallet is powered by Amtron and ICICI Bank.

Mahanta said that the app, which is being given final touches, will soon be available for download. The IT minister said the DigiDhan Mela will also see the launch of an e-payment portal of the finance department in association with the State Bank of India.

The DigiDhan Mela is being organised to promote cashless transaction and adopt digital payment practice. It also aims to help users in downloading, installing and using various digital payment systems for carrying out digital transactions. The mela will also provide free WiFi at the venue to enable citizens to download and install mobile apps for aiding on the spot digital payments. The event will see participation from e-wallet operators, banks, telecom companies, networking firms, oil companies, merchant associations and government agencies.

Besides, the chief minister and his ministerial colleagues, the Union MoS for home and the DoNER minister will attend the event. Similar melas will be organised at the district-level and panchayat-level subsequently.

Admitting that the state was lagging behind in IT adoption, Mahanta said focus was being laid on providing internet connections at all markets and setting up citizen service centres, among others.

He added that the Khetri gaon panchayat is being made fully digital and will be formally announced as the first digital GP of the state soon.
