Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal set the ball rolling by playing a perfect cover drive during the 4th TG Baruah memorial T20 tournament at the Judges’ Field on Monday.

The tournament, organised exclusively for the media fraternity, will feature 12 teams vying for the trophy. The season finale will be played on January 12.

Inaugurating the tournament, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, an avid cricket fan himself, said, “Sports can forge universal brotherhood and camaraderie and it is played cutting all barriers. Our government has set an objective of transforming Guwahati as the sports capital of the country. Assam and Northeast is a treasure trove of sports potentials and these vast pools of sports resources can play the role of a force-multiplier in converting Guwahati as a sports capital of our Nation”.

Terming that sport has great role to play in nation building and character building, Sonowal said, “Government is taking several initiatives of inculcating love for sports among the youths”. He also urged upon the media of donning the role of a mentor for popularising sports among the young minds. Parents can also play the role of catalyst in nurturing the love of sports among their kids.

Guwahati city Police Commissioner Hiren Nath, SBI chief general manager Northeast circle PVSLN Murty, DC Kamrup (metro) M Angamuthu and other officials and sports enthusiasts were present during the occasion.
