In a bid to make the new generation aware of Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwalla’s contribution to the society and to take his works to the world arena, the Assam government will take steps for preservation of Chitraban studio located at Bholaguri tea estate which was set up by the cultural legend for the making of his film Joymati in 1933.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced this while speaking at the Shilpi Divas celebration held at Borghuli playground organized by the cultural affairs department in association with district administration of Biswananth.
The chief minister also announced that the government will preserve Gohpur Police Station which witnessed the supreme sacrifice of Kanaklata Baruah and Mukunda Kakoti during the Quit India Movement. The government will also institute an award in the name of Sonit Konwar Gajen Baruah from this year, Sonowal added.
Coinciding the celebration, Sonowal also presented Shilpi award for the year 2017 to renowned vocalist Mridula Das and music director Ramen Choudhury for their outstanding contribution to the field of Assamese art and culture.
Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal urged the young generation to emulate the ideals of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla stating that Jyotiprasad was an artist per excellence and his contributions immensely enriched the Assamese art and culture. Sonowal also advocated for upholding harmony and co-existence amongst the people of Assam following the ideals of this cultural chutzpah. Sonowal further affirmed the state government’s commitment to promote the creations of the cultural doyen globally and informed that host of activities are already lined up for the same.
Stating that the cultural legend had great faith on the abilities of the youth and considered them as catalyst for societal reformation, Sonowal highlighted Jyotiprasad’s role in promoting youth power through his creations.
On the sidelines of the celebration, Sonowal unveiled a statue of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla at Bholaguri tea estate. He also visited the Chitraban studio and the dark room which the cultural icon had set up for his film Joymati.
