Tension gripped Nagaland as public in thousands thronged the Old MLA Junction in the state capital, to accord a mournful reception to the bodies of the two youths killed in police firing in Dimapur on January 31. The bodies were brought in coffins escorted by a cavalcade led by motorcyclists.

The coffins containing the bodies of the two youths – Khriesavizo Metha, son of Neimhalie Metha of Chiechama village and Bendangnungsang of Aonukpo village – were placed at the road intersection below Old MLA hostel junction on arrival from Dimapur at 4.45 pm with thousands of friends, well wishers and family.

Two persons were killed while four others were injured when police resorted to firing at 2½ Mile, Dimapur on January 31.

The situation turned violent after a large number of protesters gathered near the residence of Nagaland chief minister TR Zeliang and tried to vandalise his residence in protest against the decision of the state government to conduct the civic body elections in 12 town councils in the state. Police resorted to firing to control the mob resulting in the death of two persons.

As soon as the news spread that the state government was going to conduct civic polls on February 1 despite the assurance that it would be postponed, Dimapur Naga Youth Organisation re-imposed indefinite bandh in Dimapur from by 6 pm, January 31. The bandh was followed by gathering of youths at different places in the town. A large number of youths marched to the chief minister’s residence where they confronted with the police.
