The Assam Assembly on March 9 reached a consensus for an early resolution to the issue of Lower Subansiri Hydro Electricity Project taking the people of Assam into confidence and addressing all the concerns associated with the 2,000 MW power project.
The issue of Lower Subansiri project was raised in the Assembly by BJP’s Debananda Hazarika initiating a discussion on a matter of public importance, The Assam Tribune reported. Taking part in the discussion, members of all the political parties unanimously stated that Assam was a power-deficit State and to attain self-sufficiency, a go-ahead was needed for the LSHEP.
Declaring a consensus of the House on the issue, Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami stated that even if the matter was a sensitive one, it involved greater public interest and needed an early solution.
“Without power, industrialisation and growth of the State is not possible. However, the concerns raised by various segments, and apprehensions in the minds of people regarding the safety of the dam, impact on the downstream people must also be thoroughly addressed to reach a mutual agreement along with ensuring adequate free power supply to the State,” the Speaker said. He further said that the government can move a resolution regarding this in the House on a later date.
Minister of State for Power Pallab Lochan Das, while presenting the government’s side, said that 56 per cent work of the NHPC project was complete and the recommendations of the expert committee regarding dam safety were also incorporated in the project.
