After travelling around the globe, ‘Guns and Guitars – A musical travelogue’ on Northeast is all set to visit colleges across the country in an attempt to let the youngsters know about the region.

The 98-minute musical documentary, made by Bidyut Kotoky, brings into focus the anguish and alienation of the region’s people.

The director feels that one of the best ways to change this negative perception about the region is to expose the young generation to the realities and beauty of the region. Music being universally popular among students, the screening of this film across colleges in India will certainly help.

“If we can change the minds, even of a miniscule portion of this new generation, through this film, it would be a great achievement and the effort of five years that has gone into the film would be worthwhile,” national award-winner Kotoky said. The director informed that he has already done this in a few colleges in Pune.

“We have started screeing the documentary in different colleges but we need funds to take it to more colleges. So far I have got huge response from the colleges, but due to lack of funds I’m not being able to proceed,” he added.

After getting the selection in non-feature films for the Indian Panaroma section of the 47th International Film Festival of India last year, the documentary was screened in several international film festivals in USA, Australia and others.

The documentary tracked the journey of eight rock groups from the eight states of the region culminating into the grand finale – a day-long concert on May 24, the birth anniversary of Bob Dylan, organized by Lou Majaw, one of the most popular musicians in the region.

The film was recently screened at the Dalal Street lit fest organized by BSE Institute Limited. After the screening BSE Institute Ltd’s MD and CEO, Ambarish Datta said, “Guns and Guitars beautifully captures the wide emotions of the citizens of Northeast and the warmth they bring to us as a country. The panel discussion allowed us to debate various ways to do more in the region and support the government’s Act East policy as well.”
