The Army rescued 127 tourists stranded at the Sela Pass near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh as heavy snowfall blocked road communication in the northern areas.

The Arunachal Times on March 20 reported that the Bulgarian national was reportedly thrown some 100 metres down a cliff following the avalanche, which caused her death. She was trekking the hills with a New Zealand national Tom Hanchet (27 years), who survived the fall and escaped with minor injuries.
Heavy snowfall in Tawang district has forced the government to press Army into action as vehicular movement stands disrupted.

“Troops of Blazing Sword Division rescued 127 tourists from near Tawang, about 280 km from Tezpur,” defence spokesperson (Kolkata) wing commander SS Birdi told the media.

The rescue operation started on Saturday night and continued till the early hours of Sunday. Those rescued included five foreign nationals from Japan, New Zealand and Bulgaria.

The tourists were trapped after a massive snow blizzard struck around 2.45 pm on Saturday between Ahirgarh, Sela and Nuranang on the Tezpur-Tawang road in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, Birdi said.
