The Assam government has expressed its willingness to renovate and turn Bhupen Hazarika’s residence in Kolkata into an archive.

The state government raised the issue with Assam Bhawan director at Kolkata to pursue the matter of obtaining the ownership of the house from its current owner.

During a meeting with the Assam Bhawan officials in Kolkata, Assam chief minister expressed his government’s willingness to convert the residence of the music maestro into an archive.

Sonowal also stated that steps would be taken by the state government to erect a statue of state’s literary icon Lakshminath Bezbaruah in the Assam Bhawan premises at Kolkata.

The chief minister further said that the Assam Bhawan at Kolkata must reflect the Assamese culture and tradition through its architecture and  directed that highest standards must be maintained in the construction works of the Assam Bhawan.

He added that by using the auditorium commercially, revenue should be generated and for that the Assam Bhawan must be built as a state-of-the-art venue for holding meetings. The chief minister also directed the chief engineer of state PWD to construct a namghar in the Bhawan premises.

Sonowal also instructed the officials to start a helpline and a web portal for the students coming for higher studies to Kolkata from Assam and patients who travel to Kolkata for treatment.
