The department of communication and journalism, Gauhati University and the Poynter News University, Florida in collaboration with the United States Consulate, Kolkata and the American Centre organized a webinar on the use of social media in journalism at the Gauhati University on May 9.

Attended by around 70 media professionals, social media experts, media educators and students; the webinar under the program of ‘strengthening journalism through social media’ was designed to train the media professionals on ways of using social media for maximizing viewership or readership of news material posted online.

The webinar, funded by the US Consulate, helped the journalists, citizen journalists, social media experts and students to find newer ways of using the different tools of social media for dissemination of information.

The webinar discussed the current trends of social media, discussed the factors responsible for very popular posts, major news stories trending online and also on ways to understand what works and what does not in the social media.

The webinar was conducted by popular American journalism and multimedia instructor AL Tompkinsone of the Poynter News University and Joy Mayer, a social media engagement strategist and a faculty member at the Missouri School of Journalism and the Poynter News University.

Gauhati University vice chancellor Mridul Hazarika appreciated the initiative of the department and thanked the associated organsations including the US Consulate, Kolkata. The secretary university classes, GU HK Nath told that this is the first time the Gauhati University organized a webinar for the working journalists and media professionals on a very important area of social media journalism.

Representative of the US Consulate, Kolkata, Rupam Sen welcomed all the participants in the webinar. Head, department of communication and journalism,  Ankuran Dutta said that it is an important event organized by the department with the support of the Poynter News University and US Consulate in the golden jubilee year of the department.
