At least two people, including a child, died of electrocution as most parts of Guwahati remained flooded due to incessant rain on Tuesday.
At least two others were reported injured as floodwaters drowned major city roads on Tuesday. One of the deceased was identified as Butchan Kalita, a Class VIII student of Maria Montessori School. The other deceased was identified as Anowar Hussain, a rickshaw puller.
Life in the city was thrown out of gear as rain continued from late evening on Monday. Khanapara recorded 68 mm of rainfall while 73 mm was recorded at Rehabari and 69 mm at Gandhi Mandap, Ulubari.
Most of the areas in the city were inundated by the flood water which halted normal life besides affecting vehicular movement and electricity supply.
“I had to return home from RG Baruah road as it was getting difficult to move with huge traffic jam and flooded roads. I was stuck for more than two hours on the road,” said Raktim Das, an employee of a private firm.
Several school buses with the students inside were stuck for several hours on the road. They were later rescued by teams of State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).
Reports said that landslides occurred at several places at Bonda, Kamakhya, Maligaon, Hengerabari and Chandmari. No casualties have been reported.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed Kamrup metro district administration and Guwahati development department (GDD) to be on their toes to meet any exigencies.
Sonowal also asked both district administration and GDD to be ready with relief materials and reach out to the affected people in case of any emergency. He instructed all concerned officials to visit the affected areas and take stock of the situation. The district administration announced Rs 4 lakhs ex-gratia to the families of the victims.
