In a significant move to ease out the burgeoning unemployment problem, Oil India Limited has set target to recruit around 2,500 youth to serve in various capacities in the PSU during next five years.
Chairman and managing director, OIL, Utpal Bora assured Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on June 1 that the country’s second biggest state-owned oil and gas explorer will take proactive steps for generating more jobs for the youth of Assam.
“OIL being a credible, efficient and responsible company must come forward to help creating more jobs to our youth. It must develop a mechanism for recruitment so that skilled and qualified youths of the state find employment in the PSU”, Sonowal said.
Responding to the chief minister’s call, OIL CMD Utpal Bora informed that proper assessment of vacancies in the company will be carried out and around 2,500 youths will be recruited in the next five years to serve in various capacities in the company.
Sonowal advised OIL to take up visible CSR projects and implement the same through credible NGOs as the same would also open up job opportunities for local youth. To this, Bora said the company would examine the feasibility of the same for incorporation into its CSR guideline.
Advocating innovation and adoption of newer technology by the oil major, the chief minister further sought OIL’s support in implementation of ‘waste to resource’ project and asked the company to venture into solid waste management for production of organic manure and generation of power in the state.
“Management of solid waste is a major challenge for all urban areas. If OIL employs its expertise and technology to produce organic manure and generating power by investing under CSR in solid waste management projects, this will be its biggest contribution to the state”, the chief minister said adding that the same would also give a quantum leap to implementation of Chief Minister’s Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana (CMSGUY) and Swacch Bharat Mission (SBM) in Assam. Sonowal also suggested OIL to sign an MoU with the state government for taking the idea forward and implement the project on a pilot basis initially.
Replying to the chief minister’s request, Bora reiterated OIL’s commitment for contributing positively to the state’s growth and urged the state government to submit a proposal highlighting the project details for finalization of the same in its board meeting. He also suggested for roping in reputed companies working in the field to successfully roll out project in the state.
The OIl CMD also expressed the desire to foray into supplying pipe gas covering all major towns of the state and urged the government to take steps for connecting Assam with the National Gas Grid.
