Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, flagged in the double ascent expedition of mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa from Arunachal Pradesh symbolising closing of the expedition.
Congratulating the new world record holder, PM Modi stated that the nation is proud of Anshu’s achievement and he is happy to share the joyous moment with her and her supporting team members.
Anshu became the first ever woman in the world to climb the world’s highest point twice within the span of five days on May 21. Earlier, on May 16 she unfurled the Indian flag at the Mt Everest. Altogether she has climbed the world’s highest peak for five times.
Modi was particularly happy that a woman mountaineer, hailing from a remote border town of Arunachal Pradesh, created two world records at one go. He further stated that mountaineering fraternity around the world is looking at India and her magnificent achievement with awe.
“Interacted with mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa, who scaled Mount Everest twice in five days. Her passion towards mountaineering is commendable,” tweeted the prime minister later tweeted.
The PM also stated that mountaineering and adventure sports in India will get a new fillip and he will look into every aspect to promote and develop the same.
The flag in ceremony was attended by Union home minister for state affairs Kiren Rijiju who is also from Arunachal Pradesh, president at Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) Col HS Chauhan and president Arunachal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association (AMASA) Tsering Wange.
A mother of two, the 37-year-old Anshu, hailing from Bomdila, a remote town in Arunachal Pradesh, created a mountaineering record by climbing and unfurling the national tri-colour atop Mt Everest on May 12 in 2011 and again on May 21 twice in a span of just 10 days. In 2013, she again scaled the Mt Everest.
She also attempted to scale the peak in 2015 but due to the Nepal earthquake, along with all the mountaineers, she also had to call off her expedition in the midway.
“It was very encouraging to be appreciated by the PM. And I’m lucky to be flagged in by the PM himself,” Anshu told The News Mill from New Delhi. Her expedition was flagged off by Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on April 4 in Guwahati.
