In a bizarre incident, constable Abu Taher Ahmed at South Salmara police station in Assam, has been served notice as an illegal foreigner by the foreigners’ tribunal.
The policeman, who has been in the service for the last 10 years, has also been asked to be present in the court with legal documents to prove his citizenship.
“I was shocked and didn’t know how to react when I got the notice. I have been in police for the last 10 years. All my documents and details were checked time and again before I joined the service,” said an upset Ahmed.
Ahmed was served the notice on March 15 under the FT case no 2123/2016 and police case no 1066/2000. He is a resident of South Salmara.
The notice has also asked Ahmed to be present in the foreigners’ tribunal on August 8 to prove his citizenship.
“I have to abide by the law. What the court has said, I will follow it. I am an ordinary man. I hope it will be cleared soon,” a helpless Ahmed added.
He, however, said that no other family member has ever faced similar incidents.
This is not the solitary case where Indian citizens have been served notice. Aman Wadud, an activist and advocate, said that how can somebody be suspected when that person is working with the state police.
“This extremely unfortunate and shockingly it keeps on happening. This is the negligent attitude of the government agencies for which the genuine Indian citizens are harassed and many end up being in the detention camps,” Wadud said.
Earlier, a similar incident came to light when one school teacher Sahjahan Kaji, who has been doing election duty for several years, was barred from voting suspecting him to be a doubtful citizen in Barpeta.
According to the government records, there were around 1.36 lakh doubtful or D voters in Assam till 2016. These D voters were doubtful citizens who were barred from casting their votes.
