At least seven people were killed while two others were reported missing after landslides at Tharia village in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya. The death toll in the landslides triggered by heavy downpour in the state rose to seven on Sunday.

The landslides caused due to the incessant rain for the last several days in the Northeast state.

PTI news agency reported that at least nine people have also sustained injuries.

The New Indian Express reported that the victims are from Assam and Nepal and they were asleep when the incident took place. The landslides wiped away their houses. Some labourers of an industrial unit were also staying there along with their family members.

Meanwhile district authorities also informed that, major landslides took place in several places under Sohra civil sub division on Saturday following heavy rain. Major landslides were reported along Umstew-Wahkaba road, Tyrna, as well as Umtyngar.

Following landslide, the Shillong-Sohra road was blocked for nearly four hours, and the debris was cleared later. A suspension bridge built over Umthoin river that linked the people of Tyllap vilalge and Mawbang village has also collapsed. Flash flood at Shella and Ichamati was also reported.
