In a move to play the role of ‘force-multiplier’ of connecting people to nature, and encourage the younger generation to plant more saplings, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on June 5 announced that from next year the state government will celebrate World Environment Day at every gaon panchayat.

Stating that the government had planted 1.42 crore saplings last year, Sonowal said that in the coming year the government, in active association of the people of the state, would plant 10 crore saplings. He also sought the cooperation of the people to take positive environmental actions right from neighbourhood clean ups, to action against wildlife crimes to replanting forests.

Speaking at a programme to celebrate the world environment day at Dibrugarh University in Dibrugarh on Monday, Sonowal said that the government would also earmark areas in each village for plantation of saplings to give the people of the area an opportunity to plant saplings on special day of the family and to shape their future in sync with the nature.
