United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) vice chairman Paresh ‘Asom’ Baruah on Friday shot a letter addressed to spiritual leader Ravi Shankar. In his letter, the banned outfit’s commander in chief said that independence of sovereign Assam is the birth right of all indigenous people.

This comes after the spiritual leader’s visit to Assam on Thursday.

Paresh Baruah’s letter said that the spiritual leader repeatedly asked them to join for peace talks but ULFA (I) would like to decline joining such talks. “You have repeatedly asked us to join in the false, biased and ridiculous peace talks held by the Indian government. We would like to decline your request again to join the ‘mainstream’ peace talks because we only follow the revolutionary stream that will lead to an Independent Asom,” the letter addressed to Ravi Shankar said.

“Our struggles will continue until our ultimate goal is achieved. I urge you not to ask us to lay down our arms in hope of your empty promises,” the letter added.

Addressing the media in Guwahati on Thursday, Ravi Shankar expressed his willingness to facilitate the process if any underground group wants to come back to the mainstream.

“Several youth have already expressed their desire to come overground if the government ensures a respectable deal. They are watching how the government handles the case of the 68 youth who recently surrendered in Manipur with our intervention,” the Art of Living founder said.
