Guwahati Theatre Festival to be held from November 1

The second edition of Guwahati Theatre Festival will feature several big names of the fraternity including Shabana Azmi, Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Ranveer Shorey and Arundhati Nag among others.

The festival organized by city based tabloid, GPlus, will start from November 1 at Pragjyoti ITA, Machkhowa.

The five day festival will present five world class globally acclaimed plays.

The festival will feature Quasar Thakore Padamsee’s ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’ featuring veteran theatre personality Arundhati Nag and others on the opening day.

The second day of the festival will have ‘Broken Images’ featuring Shabana Azmi written by Girish Karnad and directed by Alyquee Padamsee. The festival has two plays from Shakespeare – ‘What’s Done is Done’ (Macbeth) and ‘Piya Behrupia’ (Twelfth Night) from two different leading theatre production houses of Mumbai.

Another exciting play is ‘The Gentleman’s Club’ which is a take on legendary actor of yester years Shammi Kapoor’s colourful life during the 70s.

“Guwahati Theatre Festival has become a landmark event after its first edition last year in the cultural landscape of the region. The purpose of this unique festival is to provide a platform in the region for a diverse range of world-class performing groups to showcase their performances amongst new audiences infusing freshness and vivacity,” said Sunit Jain, festival chairman.

“Along with the plays, this festival also promises to provide learning opportunities to the local youth through workshops and interactions that have been planned with visiting experts who are globally acknowledged personalities in the theatre arts,” added Asha Kuthari Chaudhuri, the festival director.

The second edition of the festival will also feature performances by various college based theatre groups from the city who have been shortlisted after a round of nominations and auditions.

The second edition of the festival is initiated by GPlus in association with Apollo Hospitals and supported by Vodafone, Indian Oil, Ballantine’s and Hastakshar. The tickets of the event will be available at leading restaurants and coffee shops in town as well as on bookmyshow.com.
