England cricketer Kevin Pietersen on Sunday batted for a secure environment for the rhinos at the Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

In a tweet on Sunday afternoon, the former England batsman highlighted the “poaching issue” at the Unesco World Heritage Site. “I’m led to believe there’s poaching issues in Kaziranga National Park of rhinos…! You know that YOU can help! I’ll help too!,” the star cricketer tweeted.

Pietersen also tweeted a ‘logo’ of a rhino along with his initials KP.

Replying to the tweets, tweeples informed KP that a lot of the rhino population in Kaziranga National Park are affected by floods as well. Thanking the smashing batsman, tweeples thanked him for highlighting an important issue.

Poaching of the one-horned rhino continues to the one of the major environmental issues in the region with Kaziranga National Park along with other grasslands reporting a number of incidents every year. Kaziranga National Park, Pobitora in Marigaon district, and Orang National Park in Darrang district of Assam account for almost 95% of the total wild one-horned rhino in the world.

Earlier, the environment ministry severely criticised the BBC and recommended the blacklisting of its South Asia correspondent Justin Rowlatt for a documentary that highlighted the government’s “ruthless anti-poaching strategy” at the Kaziranga National Park.

The BBC film, Killing For Conservation, explores what it calls the “dark secrets” of Kaziranga and examines if its war on poaching has gone too far.

Reports said that as many as 20 rhinos were killed in Assam in 2016 alone.
