Dadasaheb Phalke Award winning filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan who is attending the first Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) said that this festival will help the Northeast filmmakers to grow.

The 76-year-old Malayalam filmmaker said that the region which is otherwise neglected will be benefited from this festival in the long run.

“The northeast region is neglected. The filmmakers from here had to go other places to watch world cinema, but now global cinema is coming here which is an opportunity for everybody here. I believe in 10 years of time a good generation of filmmakers will be produced here,” said Gopalakrishnan who was honoured with the British Film Institute Award for his film Elippathayam in 1981.

The GIFF being organized by the Assam government-owned Jyoti Chitraban (Film Studio) Society in association with Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute (DBHRGFTA). It started on October 28 and will continue till November 2. More than 75 films are being screened at the festival from over 32 countries.

Gopalakrishnan who has won national awards at least 16 times will be the chief guest in the closing ceremony of the festival on Thursday.

Congratulating the organizers, Gopalakrishnan said that the role of the government in conducting such event is very crucial.

“I’m overwhelmed by the great ambience here. Now, it’s important to carry it forward. It’s great to see the support of the state government here. Otherwise to conduct such event is very difficult which is extremely costly,” added Gopalakrishnan who is an alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India.

GIFF director Monita Borgohain said that the organizers are extremely happy to experience the overwhelming response of the crowd.

“We are so glad to receive the love and warm response of the people. We have completed 5,000 delegate registrations in the festival so far,” said Borgohain.
