As many as 1,979 government-run primary schools of Assam’s 12 districts are running with less than 5 students and 8,905 schools of these districts are yet to have adequate classrooms.
Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that, the erroneous figures have came to light following the second phase of ‘Gunotsav’ held between October 10-13 covering 18,811 primary schools in Sivsagar, Tinsukia, Kamrup (Rural), Cachar, Nagaon, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Udalguri, Charaideo, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, the Assam education minister said that, 9 per cent schools of 12 districts were graded A+ following evaluation of schools and students in the second phase of ‘Gunotsav’ in the state.
The Assam minister said that, a total of 18,811 schools in 12 districts were evaluated and a total of 11,20,960 students appeared in the evaluation.
“Following the evaluation, we have found that 1,672 schools – or 9 per cent schools – managed to score grade A+. Apart from it, 5,480 or 29 per cent schools graded A, 6,047 or 32 per cent schools under B grade, 3,638 or 19 per cent schools were graded C and 1,974 or 10 per cent schools under D grade,” Sarma said.
“If we compared with the first phase evaluation result, then it revealed that, maximum schools improved grades and it is a good sign. In the first phase of Gunotsav evaluation, only 6 per cent schools managed to get grade A+,” Sarma said.
The Assam minister said that, 396 schools of Sivsagar district were managed to grade A+ and the Upper Assam district stood in top position in the second phase of Gunotsav.
“Following Sivsagar, 264 schools of Tinsukia, 187 schools of Kamrup (Rural), 186 schools of Cachar, 174 schools of Nagaon, 154 schools of Jorhat, 91 schools of Kokrajhar, 67 schools of Bongaigaon, 60 schools of Udalguri, 49 schools of Charaideo district were under A+ grade. Two hilly districts Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong had performed worst performance in the second phase of Gunotsav,” Samra said.
The third phase of Gunotsav will be held in 13 districts from January 3-6.
