Mamata Banerjee

Criticising West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for her remarks on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, BJP’s national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Friday said she had hurt the Constitution and the Supreme Court with her comments.

Banerjee had claimed the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam to determine the state’s original inhabitants was a “conspiracy to drive away Bengalis” from there.

“Her comments have hurt the Constitution of the country, the people and the Supreme Court. Her remarks have hurt the prestige of the apex court and the constitution,” Vijayvargiya said in a statement.

“I condemn her comments,” he said, adding that the NRC is being updated after consultation with all stakeholders.

BJP has accused Banerjee of making it “an issue out of a non-issue” for her political interests.

“Ever since Narendra Modi came to power, she has been making comments which hurt the spirit of the federal structure and her comments about the NRC amount to inciting violence”, Vijayvargiya alleged.

He said the Assam government is competent enough to protect its citizens.
