The 29th North East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) biennial conference and XIth International Geographical Union (IGU) Commission seminar began B Borooah College in the city on Thursday with the participation of scholars and students from various parts of India and abroad.

The focal theme of the seminar is ‘Environment and Sustainable Livelihood’ which will continue till February 10. It’s being organized by the department of Geography in collaboration with Commonwealth Geographical Bureau (CGB) and six IGU Commissions and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT).

On Thursday around 40 scholars from Japan, Australia, Singapore, Canada, Poland, Nigeria, Israel, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Georgia, Bhutan and Jamaica besides from different parts of India participated.

The plenary lecture was session I was organized in the Bhupen Hazarika auditorium with CGB president Elizabeth Thomas Hope as the chairperson and IGU vice president Elena dell’ Agnese as the speaker with the topic titled ‘Towards Eco-critical Geography’ Landscape of Disasters and Environment Discourse in Post Apocalypse Narrative, said a press statement.

Besides, 14 technical sessions were also held during the day. On Friday, another 31 technical sessions are being scheduled and on Saturday, the last day will witness 11 technical sessions.

Nripendra Ram Kalita, one of the joint conveners of the event said that on Thursday, they witness overwhelming response of the participants and are looking for more in the next couple of days.

B Borooah College was established in 1943 in the name of Bholanath Barooah, a doyen of Assamese business. B Borooah College, one of the premier seats of higher learning contributed significantly to the academic and cultural life of the entire northeastern region. In the recent NAAC visit, B Borooah College has been awarded with ‘A’ grade.
