The NF Railway has collected Rs 41.82 crore from passengers who have tried to travel without booking a ticket during the current financial year.
The railways conducted drive from April, 2017 till March 15 of this year. During that period 6.5 lakh passengers were found to be travelling without a ticket.
As per Section 137 of the Indian Railway Act of 1989, travelling without ticket, improper ticket or un-booked luggage in an offence punishable by imprisonment or fine or both.
Last year NFR collected Rs 34.14 crore from 5.06 lakh number of passengers during the same period of time.
A statement from the NFR said that this is about 28.50 per cent higher in regard to number of cases detected in comparison to last year.
“This increase is despite suspensions and cancellations of train services of mail/express and passenger trains during August and September, 2017 due to breaches and floods which lead to over almost 4.47 million decrease in the number of passengers,” said the statement.
This is about 22.50 per cent higher than the earnings in comparison to last year. Moreover, this is the highest ever penalty realization by NF Railway since formation of the zone in 1959.
