The body of a missing nurse from Shillong was found near Umian Lake on May 29. Police officials confirmed that the deceased woman was Laiyaton Soro, aged between 27-28 years, who was missing since May 26. Soro was working as a nurse at Nazareth Hospital, Shillong.

The police traced her location through the IMEI number of her mobile phone.

Hailing from Manipur, the deceased woman Leiyaton Soro, was living with her brother at a rented accommodation in Laitumukhrah. The woman went missing after her duty hours on Saturday. Her brother couldn’t trace her and later approached police.

On May 29, after the body was brought to the Shillong hospital, the atmosphere outside was filled with shock, sorrow and condemnation as relatives and friends poured in after getting the news.

People expressed shock and concern as such crimes against women are often unheard in Shillong. Quoting various leaders and youth icons, The Northeast Today said that the nurse’s murder raised eyebrows about women’s safety in the Northeast state as cry for justice grew louder.

“These cases are happening from time to time. The police department and state women’s commission have to investigate this case very seriously. Even though the victim is not from our state, the government should put pressure on the concern authority to investigate the case so that the young woman gets justice. Besides, a good relationship with the neighbouring states of Northeast should be maintained. We strongly condemn this incident and request the state police to investigate the same very seriously to find out the culprit and punish according to the law,” national youth awardee Kitboklang Nongphlang was quoted as saying by The Northeast Today.
