The doors of the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati were opened for devotees on Tuesday morning after the temple was shut for the annual Ambubachi Mela.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal offered his prayers early on Tuesday morning as the annual Ambubachi Mela comes to an end.
Thousands of devotees were lined up since the start of the Ambubachi Mela to get a glimpse of Maa Kamakhya. During the four days of the mela, the temple was shut for visitors. After the nibritti ritual – believed to purify the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, after the Mother Goddess completes the four-day annual menstrual cycle – the temple was opened for visitors on Tuesday morning.
The Kamakhya Temple witnessed lakhs of devotees flocking to the Nilachal hills, where the temple is located, during the past 4 days.
The arrangements for the devotees are being closely monitored by the state government with multiple departments working round the clock. The mela is promoted as an integral part of the ‘religious tourism’ by the BJP-led government in Assam.
