Assam State Jamiat Ulama led by Badruddin Ajmal on June 11 met NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela regarding the NRC update process. The delegation has requested Hajela to bring certain changes in the system to make it easier and errorless.

“We submitted a memorandum to the coordinator. We want an error-free NRC where no names of foreigners will be featured,” said Ajmal after meeting Hajela on Monday.

He also appealed the people to maintain peace and harmony.

On the mistakes of names and ages which can be a problem for the final draft, the delegation requested Hajela for his intervention.

“As you know, discrepancies and spelling mistakes in the electoral rolls were made by electoral enumerators mostly according to their whims and caprice and sometimes sitting in one place of a village, taking information from other non-concerned persons, which resulted in large scale spelling mistakes, wrong recording of ages, title, surnames and other discrepancies for which the persons concerned are not responsible,” read the memorandum.

It further added that there is no law compelling the concerned persons to correct such mistakes cautioning that, otherwise, they shall be treated as non-citizens.

“We request you to issue specific instruction to the concerned authorities for ignoring such spelling mistakes, wrong recording of ages, difference of titles and surnames,” added Ajmal.

The first draft of NRC was published on December 31 midnight while the second and final draft is scheduled to be published on June 30.

In the evening Ajmal also met chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
