The Gauhati University will conduct entrance test for admission into various postgraduate courses for the academic session 2018-19. This is for the first time that the university will conduct an entrance test for all the courses, for all applicants, irrespective of applicant’s parent university or institution.

According to the official website of the university, the entrance test will be held in the first week of July for admission to some 1,800 seats in over 45 postgraduate departments.

In traditional courses, GU entrance test will contribute 40% weightage of the total marks and 60% of those will be taken from the marks obtained by the applicant in the qualifying examination (e.g. Bachelor’s Degree examination) in case of the students with qualifying degree from Gauhati University. While for the students from other universities, 100% weightage will be on the marks secured in the GU entrance test.

In interdisciplinary courses, like earlier years, GU entrance test marks will be given preference this year as well.

According to one of the applicants, it is a great initiation by the university which will provide an opportunity for all – especially for the aspiring ‘not-so-high-scoring’ talented students who have fairly deep knowledge of the respective subjects. It is, by far, the best method possible to recognize the eligible students who are fit for the course to be studied, the applicant said.

Gauhati University is one of the premier institutions of higher education in Northeast India and one of the most sought-after postgraduate institutions. According to the data provided by the statistical unit of the university, the total enrolment of postgraduate students is 3,546 for the year 2016-17.
