Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched vernacular news daily ‘Gati Dainik’ at a function in Silchar on June 8.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Sonowal said that media plays a vital role in creating and enriching a democratic society. It plays a role in strengthening the unity amidst diversity in the society. He urged the media fraternity to highlight the schemes of the government proactively for the benefit of the people. At the same time, media should not circulate any news which has detrimental effect on the unity and integrity of the society, Sonowal added.

The chief minister further said that singing legends like Bhupen Hazarika and Hemanga Biswas spread the message of harmony in the society and we should be in a position to take their messages forward for strengthening age-old harmony in the state.

Sonowal expressed hope that the agenda set by ‘Gati Dainik’ would be successful in strengthening the society based on universal brother hood.

He also said that Barak Valley under the previous dispensation of the state was lagging behind on all vital parameters. However, the present state government has accorded top-most priority for the development of three districts of Barak Valley along with other areas belonging to Brahmaputra Valley, hills and plains.

He also said that different communities and ethnicities of Assam are working in tandem for strengthening the edifice of a stronger Assam and all the people of the state should contribute to the cause of a strong and harmonious Assam.

Speaking on the occasion, health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that ‘Gati Dainik’ reflecting the true picture of Indian tradition would go a long way in strengthening the society.
