Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi hailed the role of small and medium newspapers in India in highlighting the core issues of the nation and disseminating them even in the far flung areas and keeping the people informed.
Meeting a delegation of the association of small and medium newspapers at Raj Bhavan on June 23, governor Mukhi lauded the newspapers for strengthening democracy by percolating news and views down to the grassroot level of the society. He however, acknowledged various problems being faced by these newspapers and confided that with unified efforts the problems can be resolved to a greater extent.
Mukhi requested the members of the association to influence the small and medium newspapers to become the ‘voice of the voiceless’ and concentrate more on development communication so that they can be used as a tool to set agenda for the societal issues and find answers to them. The governor at the same time requested the association to influence the small and medium newspaper owners to profess neutrality and objective reporting.
The association apprised the governor about various problems that these newspapers face and sought his intervention to solve the problems. The association members also stated the role and position of the small and medium newspapers in the country to the governor. It is to be noted that the association is recognised by the Press Council of India.
