The nearly 5km Umsning bypass on the Jorabat-Umiam four-lane highway will be opened for traffic by July 30. Two lanes of the bypass have already been opened for traffic.

A National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) official said that the bypass will be fully completed by July 15 and it will be followed by a safety audit.

The award for the construction of the four-lane from Jorabat to Umiam was handed over to the contractors in May, 2010. NHAI officials said that the Umsning bypass was delayed from the contractor’s side – because of land issues in the beginning and then the rains and further due to manpower issues because of the recent law and order situation.

Once complete, the section will ease traffic movement which now is clogged due to the narrow 4.17km two-lane section between Lad Mawrong and Umtrew bridge.

Discussing about near future plans, NHAI officials said that a new project to construct the Jowai-Ratacherra road into a four-lane project will be implemented by National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.

The total project cost of the 101km road, including land acquisition, is Rs 1464.5 crore.
