The final draft NRC in Assam was released on July 30 leaving out more than 40 lakh applicants who couldn’t provide proper documents.

Out of the total 3.29 crore applicants, 40,07,707 names were left out of NRC final draft. Officials in Guwahati said that the left out will not be branded as foreigners and will be given ample opportunity to prove their citizenship.

“I must emphasise that this is a draft, not the final one,” Registrar General of India Sailesh said at a press conference in Guwahati on July 30.

Further, the officials said that three forms will be issued soon for claims and objections. The forms – claim form, objection form and correction form – will enable the NRC officials to fine tune the draft thereby enabling the final NRC.

“The NRC is a legal process under the Citizenship Act 1955. It has been transparently and meticulously carried out. It has provided adequate opportunity to all applicants who submitted in 2015 and we came out with the first draft. Today, we are releasing the final draft,” said Prateek Hajela, state coordinator of NRC in Assam, at the press conference in Guwahati.
