Mobile internet services were suspended across Manipur since July 20 for five days “to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order.”

A report by Assam Tribune, quoting sources said that some anti-social elements are using social media extensively for transmission of hate video messages inciting the passions of the public.

The report further said that the step has been taken to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in Manipur and shall be in force with immediate effect for the next five days.

The suspension of the mobile internet services came into force from Friday morning.

In the order letter, Manipur’s special secretary (home) KH Raghumani Singh stated, “The social media has become a handy tool for rumour mongers and is being used to incite the general public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the entire state of Manipur.”

The Northeast state is rocked by protests demanding the ouster of Manipur University vice-chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey. Students have been demanding the vice-chancellor’s resignation over multiple allegations of administrative negligence and misuse of varsity funds.

Tension prevails in the state capital Imphal after the state-wide strike called by the Manipur University Students’ Union demanding removal of Pandey turned violent.
