State Bank of India, North Eastern Circle, celebrated its foundation day, known as ‘Bank Day’ on July 1 by organising art competition for children, felicitation of eminent personalities and a cultural night.
Chief general manager Sunil Kumar Tandon, general managers SBI North Eastern Circle Digmanu Gupta and Ajay Kumar Singh along with other senior officials, employees of the bank were present on the occasion.
Chief strategy officer at SBI corporate centre Mumbai, PVSLN Murty also joined the celebrations. Murty earlier held the post of chief general manager, SBI NE Circle.
SBI initiated the celebration with ‘sit & draw’ competition among employee’s children at its local head office on June 27. On July 1, a function was organised at Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium, Kalakshetra in Guwahati, where the bank felicitated 3 eminent personalities – DGP Kuladhar Saikia, veteran actor Kulada Kr Bhattacharjee and internationally famed dramatist from Manipur Ratan Thiyam.
The felicitation was followed by a cultural night with performance by singer Nahid Afrin of Indian Idol junior fame.
SBI descends from the Bank of Calcutta, founded in 1806, via the Imperial Bank of India, making it the oldest commercial bank in the Indian subcontinent. The Bank of Madras merged into the other two ‘presidency banks’ in British India – Bank of Calcutta and Bank of Bombay – to form the Imperial Bank of India, which in turn became the State Bank of India in 1955.
