After travelling the globe – participating in as many as 80 film festivals and wining 44 awards – the much talked Village Rockstars is finally here for the viewers of Assam and metros in the country.

Rima Das’s Village Rockstars was released across the state in 34 theatres and in five major cities across the country on September 28.

In New Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, PVR will showcase the film.

Made with an approximate budget of Rs 30 lakhs, using her own DSLR camera and with untrained village children, Village Rockstars has been able to win everyone’s heart so far. The film has won Golden Lotus which is the best feature film at the National Film Awards besides three other awards which is very rare for an Assamese film.

“Many people asked me about the release of the film. I’m pretty excited to bring the film finally for my home viewers. No doubt it has travelled the globe but to know the reaction of my home viewers will be really important to me. The incredible love that we received from the people, while you waited patiently to see Village Rockstars in your local theatre, I can only thank you for your loving patience and continued blessing,” said Rima Das on Thursday ahead of the release of the film.

The one hour 27 minute film narrates the struggle which 10-year-old Dhunu, the protagonist, has to undergo while trying to achieve her goal under gender stereotypes on what a girl should do amid poverty and other hostile conditions.

The film was shot in the filmmaker’s native village Kalardiya in Chhaygaon which is around 50 kilometres from Guwahati.

All the characters including the protagonist Bhanita Das have never faced camera before. “Village Rockstars is a very personal film and close to my heart. It almost changed my life,” said Das about her film.

Village Rockstars had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), 2017, before travelling the globe. Das’s next film Bulbul Can Sing has already been premiered at the TIFF, 2018.
