Sonapur College organized North East India Inter College Debating Competition, 2018 on November 3. The topic of the debate was ‘Competition, not caste reservation, can only uplift all sections of Indian Society’.

Former governor of Meghalaya Ranjit Sekhar Mooshahary participated in the debate as the speaker of the house. Altogether 36 participants from 18 colleges from the region took part in the competition organized by Sonapur College.

The winners in the individual and the team category were awarded with Sinam Uriba Singh Memorial prizes which were sponsored by Sinam Iboton Singh, a faculty member of Mathematics of the college.

Kasturi Chutia of Handique Girls’ College, Guwahati, was adjudged as the Best Debater. She won a cash prize of Rs 10000 and a trophy, while the second best debater award was received by Manaswita Mahanta of Gauhati University. She won a cash prize of Rs 7000 and a trophy. Balajied Nongbsap of Shillong Commerce College won the third prize of Rs 5000 and a trophy.

Interestingly, all the three winners of the competition put forwarded their arguments against the motion of the house.

Handique Girls’ College and Gauhati University won the best and the second best team of the event and were awarded with trophies and cash awards of Rs 5000 and Rs 3000 respectively. The prizes were distributed by the speaker of the house Ranjit Sekhar Mooshahary, principal of the college Devabrot Khanikor and the judges.

In the competition, Tania Roy of Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati was adjudged as the recipient of a special award –The Telegraph Unputdownable Debater of North East India 2018.

The judges of the competition of were Pranab Jyoti Neog, director at Xavier Institute of Management and Information Technology, Chayamoni Bhuyan of NewsLive and Arup Jyoti Kalita, state coordinator of REACH, US AID.
