The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has kept their options open for an alliance before the Lok Sabha elections as the party didn’t specify anything after their central executive meeting in Guwahati on Wednesday.
Without naming any party, the meeting attended by the senior leaders, has decided to go together with like-minded regional parties of the seven states of the region.
“We have discussed on the Lok Sabha elections. We have discussed on how to strengthen our base. Apart from that we will give importance to the unity of the smaller like-minded regional parties. We will discuss with them and will go ahead,” AGP general secretary Kamala Kalita said at the party headquarters on Wednesday.
AGP has been with BJP before they broke up because of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
There has been speculation that the AGP might go back with the BJP though the state BJP unit has expressed its unwillingness to resume the partnership.
On the other hand, Congress said that the door is open for AGP in their bid to stop the BJP from coming to power.
On Wednesday, though the AGP leaders discussed the election and other issues during the day-long meeting, they have tactfully stayed away from making any clear statement.
During the meeting, the AGP leadership formed committees for election manifesto, election campaign, election strategy making and publicity.
Among others, the regional party led by Atul Bora has urged the Centre to give importance towards the security of Indo-Bangladesh international border.
“The border in the Northeast part with Bangladesh is as crucial as Indo-Pakistan. There have been reports of some criminal activities taking place along the border. So, we have decided to request the Central government to give importance in securing the Indo-Bangladesh border as well,” Kalita said.
