An alleged kingpin of cattle smuggling racket to Bangladesh, Mohammed Sarfaraz, who was arrested in Bihar last week, was brought to Assam on June 24.
Assam Police along with its Bihar counterpart arrested the alleged kingpin of a cattle smuggling gang from Gopalganj district in Bihar. A team of Assam Police with the help of Bihar Police on Saturday arrested Sharfaraz (43) along with 5 others on charges of running the syndicate of smuggling cattle to Bangladesh.
The accused was allegedly running the cattle smuggling racket and used to smuggle them to the neighbouring country Bangladesh through the international border of Assam.
“Sharfaraz was the main man behind smuggling cattle to Bangladesh from North India,” Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar told the media.
“We have so far arrested six cattle smugglers from different parts of the state and during interrogation, we were informed about Sharfaraz. We are thankful to our Bihar counterparts for their help in the arrest of the main accused,” he added.
Sharfaraz was earlier a truck driver in Assam and the police was trying to get details as to how he got into the illegal trade of smuggling. The arrest of Sharfaraz was possible on the basis of confessional statement of another accused Dildar Hussain who was arrested earlier.
Earlier a case had been registered at Basistha Police Station in Guwahati against cattle smuggling on the complaint of one Salim Javed Hazarika of Guwahati.
The complainant alleged that Mohammed Sarfaraz of Hastinapur, 9 Mile, Jorabat, and Dildar Hussain of Sonapur Balighat along with 14 other accused were running a racket involving transportation of cattle illegally and same were smuggled across Bangladesh border.
It was also alleged that payment of the transactions were made through hawala transactions running through Fancy Bazar area of Guwahati.
