NRC officer nabbed for accepting bribe in Assam

Anti-Corruption Bureau in Guwahati on June 13 nabbed Field Level Officer (FLO) of NRC Sewa Kendra, Shahjahan (48), red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

The sleuths conducted the raid following a complaint lodged by Kajari Ghosh Dutta of Ananda Nagar under Dispur Police Station in Guwahati.

The bribe money has been seized from the possession of the accused. Another accused Rahul Parasar (27), Assistant Local Registrar of Citizen Registration (LRCR) of the same NRC Sewa Kendra involved in the crime was also arrested.

Relevant documents have also been seized by the ACB team from the office of the NRC Sewa Kendra.

The accused had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for entering the name of the complainant in the draft NRC. The accused had highlighted some technical defects in her application and demanded her, the bribe to correct the technical defects and enter her name thereafter into the final draft of NRC. The complainant was to pay the bribe amount on June 13.

The arrested duo will be forwarded to the Special Court in the morning on June 14.

The final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be published on July 31 as directed by the Supreme Court.

As per the NRC authorities, nearly 85 per cent of the proceeding has been completed so far. Prior to that, an additional draft will be published on June 22. Earlier, June 15 was set for the publication of this additional draft.
